Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Delsea Middle School School English Department has made the decision to make summer reading voluntary for our general ELA classes for the 22-23 school year. Before the end of the school year, the Honors level teachers will be reaching out to the students enrolled in those courses to discuss the specifics of summer reading for their program.
Reading a wide variety of texts exposes students to the complex and varied viewpoints that shape their world. To encourage this growth, the English department is promoting reading for enjoyment as a way to extend our students' worldview beyond their individual lives. Reading for pleasure also provides a solid foundation for continuing education and career readiness. Students who choose to read in their spare time benefit by increasing their comprehension as well as developing their ability to be discerning readers and thinkers.
While summer reading is not required this year, the ELA teachers are strongly encouraging students to explore different voices and experiences in literature throughout the summer months. To help students select books, the English department has put together the following grade-level recommended reading lists. As an added incentive, prior to the end of the school year, students are welcome to explore and borrow books from the Delsea Middle School Media Center to enjoy over the summer.
In addition, two summer evening dates will be held on Monday, July 11th and Thursday, August 11th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm in the Delsea Middle School Media Center where students can receive assistance from the Media Specialist when accompanied by a parent.
Students are encouraged to read as many books as they would like over the summer, and upon their return in September, students will have the option of taking an Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz on any one book they have read. The score and points earned on that one AR quiz will count towards their individual reading goal for the first goal period of the 22-23 school year.
If you have any questions regarding the middle school’s summer reading goals and expectations, please reach out to the district’s Supervisor of Humanities, Dr. Michael Berner, at [email protected].
Sincerely,
The English Department
